Dear Donald

Thank you for the information you have sent regarding the Mort Newsletter and family page.

My interest in the Mort family is through my Great Grandmother Mary Hagan b. ca. 1890. Mary's first husband was my Great Grandfather Joseph Drury b.1886. Their children were, my Grandmother Amy b. 1906 and Joseph b. 1903. Joseph Drury died young in an accident and then Mary remarried Alec Mort. I am assuming they were married about 1909, as their first child Leonard Mort was born 1910, second child Florence b. 1914 and Alec b. 1919.

I am very interested in locating any information about Mary Hagan's parents. I have been told her mother's name was Bridget Murphy b. ca 1870 and migrated from Ireland to Lancashire.

Mary went to St Mary's Church in Palace St., Bolton. (A Catholic school)

There is also a Harold Mort b. 1924 at St. Mary's.. then comes Edmund F. Mort b. 1949. maybe a grandson of one of her sons.

I am hoping you can ascertain whether these Morts are related to your Mort family, and if any one in the Mort family is also researching Mary Hagan.

Thank you for your interest, and the information concerning the Mort Family Page. I appreciate your offer of posting my query to your newsletter.
yours sincerely
Liza V. Carless

From: Nancy Bridges esnan@dreamscape.com

I have a possible lead on the parents of my William Francis MORT (b: 24 Jul 1866 in NY). Recently discovered family records state that William's parents were Abraham Mort and Florence (Lyons?) Mort. There is a possibility that Florence may have had a brother Christopher. Family oral history indicates that William may have had a sister (nothing known about her) and that they were placed in an orphanage. Does any of this fit in with anyone's tree? Any help with my MORT mystery would be most appreciated. You can find my Mort querries at http://www.genforum.com in the MORT forum.
Thank you.
Nancy Bridges

10/17/2000: From Connie Adams riccon143@fuse.net I have official documentation that John Morts is the fifth child of Richard Morts and Hery Eliza Staley. John later changed his last name to Mortz, but birth records show him being born as a Morts. Eliza Staley/Stoley was born in Indiana in 1861 Vigo County. Richard is the one I am seeking the location of his Birth State. Richard Morts born abt.. 1838 and listed to have been born in Penn. as stated on John's Certificate of Death from Knox County Indiana. Richard is NOT buried at the Lawernceville Cemetery, with his father and son's and daughters. Both my husband and I searched that entire Cemetery for Richard. That is a big job. Richard was once married to a Hilda Nishimer before marring Hery Eliza. Staley/Stoily. I am sending you a copy of all that I have on the 5 Generations, Descendants of the First John Mortz b. 1810 d. 1854 and buried at Lawrenceville Cemetery Section 3. I am missing the middle piece of this family's lineage-Richard Morts. If you come across any information on Richard Morts/z I would love to know about it. John somehow changed the spelling of his given name from Morts to MORTZ, so all the children of John Morts now spell their last name as Mortz. John Mortz born August 31, 1890 in Terre Haute Indiana (Vigo County) died August 7, 1928 in an Explosion, buried in Lawrenceville Cemetery Section 4 Lawrence Co. IL. John Mortz was married in 1919 to Sue Beulah Sisk b. Feb. 12, 1900 in Harrisburg IL daughter of Henry Jackson Sisk and Sue Henry Brown. They had 5 children: Attis Sue Mortz b. Dec. 3, 1919 in Harrodsburg IL. ( Hattie and Attis were twins) Attis is still living in FL. Hattie Elizabeth Mortz b. Dec. 3, 1919 - (my mother in law) Died Sept. 17, 1985 in KY. John Richard Mortz b. June 24, 1922 in Wasau IL. Died Sept. 22, 1994 in FL. Eugene Andrews Mortz b. May 9, 1924 in Danville IL. Still living in MO. Marie Mortz B. 1927- D. 1928 buried Lawrenceville Cemetry Section 4, Lawrence Co. IL. Connie Adams riccon143@fuse.net

ASTLEY . . .

Astley Hall, at the centre of the village's conservation area, dates from 1650 when it was known as Dam House, home of the Mort family. During the 19th century it ceased to be a private house and became first the fever isolation sanatorium, and later Astley Hospital.

A story of blighted love is told of Dam House. Anne, a daughter of the Protestant Mort family, fell in love with the Catholic, James Speakman. Her father paid the family to leave the district, and Anne pined away and died. Legend has it that her ghost can sometimes be seen wandering the paths between Astley and Bedford looking for her lover. She is known as the Grey Lady.

  From: Harry Schofield harry@hs91.freeserve.co.uk

Hi Donald
Thanks for touching base.
My own interest in the MORT families is that I am descended from Thomas
Mort, born in 1805 at Leigh, the first stationmaster at Kenyon Junction, who
entertained Stephenson the Railway pioneer. His daughter Elizabeth married
William Schofield, and their daughter Sarah Ellen Schofield married Henry
Mort, son of James Mort and Hannah Hill (James being the son of Henry Mort
and Mary Dorning). Sarah Ellen's death certificate states she was his widow,
but the marriage could not have lasted long as she had two children shortly
after the marriage and they both had the surname Schofield. One of these
sons being my grandfather.
I have been unable to solve this mystery as yet.
I am also descended from the MORT family of Peel, on my mothers side, having
traced her direct ancestors back to the late 1790's, and possibly further.
I have several thousand MORT records taken from the IGI, parish registers,
wills, census returns, newspaper reports etc, and I have created many family
trees and group record sheets from this information. I could, with some
degree of speculation, take my MORT connections back to the late 1690's on
both my parents side, without making any common source. I expect to make
that common source at some time. The work continues, and hopefully some day
I can start to produce web pages when I understand the technology.

If you have any particular queery, then I would be happy to check the
information that I have, and exchange ideas, etc

Regards..Harry

Bartholemews, Westhoughton for a marriage on 9 June 1873 states: Henry Mort, age 19, bachelor, Railway Servant, residing in Westhoughton, father James Mort, deceased Silk Weaver Sarah Ellen Schofield, Spinster residing in Westhoughton, father William Schofield, deceased brewer In the presence of Rachel Bradshaw At this point, I would mention that Sarah Ellen Schofield gave birth to two children, but neither of them had the surname Mort, but Schofield. One was my grandfather Thomas Schofield, born 1875, and the other his brother William Schofield, born 1879. Not wishing to confuse the situation any more than neccessary, but Henry Mort appears to be married again in 1881 to Annie, and I have her death certificate as she was buried at Risley as Annie Mort, wife of Henry Mort, brewers labourer, although I have tracked all marriages of Henry Mort prior to 1881 without finding the marriage to an Annie. 1881 Census for Warrington Source: Wigan History Shop 7 Gandy St Henry Mort Head Mar 27 Brewers Labourer Culcheth Ann " Wife Mar 31 Houghton Green I believe that Henry joined members of his family in America, and married again. Once you have absorbed the information above, which I have traced from original material in most cases, I can supply more Mort family tree details regarding my own family. Sarah Ellens father was William Schofield and her mother Elizabeth Mort, daughter of Thomas Mort the first stationmaster at Kenyon, where Stevenson had his first railway trials. I also have Morts on my mothers side, her family tree relates to the Peel area of Bolton, just a few miles from Kenyon. I have around 8000 records relating to the Mort surname in Lancashire, and I would be grateful for any further entries, particularly the early records. The emmigration details you have, I won't have as I haven't been down that road yet. Regretably I don't have a single entry for a Matthius Mort. I look forward to exchanging information and ideas in the future, please keep in touch. Dear Mother:--

Peaceful be thy silent slumber,
Peaceful in the grave so low,
Thou no more will join our number,
Thou no more our songs shall know.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When the day of life has fled,
When in Heaven with joy to greet thee
Where no farewell tear is shed.

HOUSTON CEMETERY Located on the south and north side of the Houston-Russia Road, about a quarter mile west of St. Rt. 66, Mt Jefferson, South Houston, and North Houston. The Houston Congregational Christian Church, the remainder of six that have been in the close area, is just west of the newer, north part of the cemetery. One was the Mt Jefferson Presbyterian Church, and a second was the Beech Grove United Brethern society, and third was The Mt Jefferson Christian Church, fourth was the Methodist Episcopal Church, and fifth was the St James German Reformed Church. Earliest burial found was in 1824. Not withstanding that the nearby and to the south east and across Nine Mile Creek was a four room School House, named Houston Special, that was built on a previous cemetery. Probably that of some Native Americans. And too, just to the south of the Houston Cemetery and across the same creek, was a large Native American living area with past signs of long houses and stone working sites. Note sections 3, 5 & of the old cemetery (OC)

Demuth/DeMuth/Damuth/etc. Researchers – I have set up a form web site at http://www.egroups.com/group/DEMUTH for the Demuth/DeMuth/Damuth surname. I am inviting you join this exchange. This form will be open to anyone with an interest in family history. Some of the things that I will be posting to the website are obituaries and queries. There are other features on this site that will be used at a later date, as time permits. Under the “Links” area I hope to add URL links to DEMUTH related sites, ANYONE with a appropriate link may add it to this area. Under the “Files” area of the web site I hope to post a small description of each “Demuth Family Line”. This may even be an area where complete listing of various family lines could be posted. Help in developing this site would be appreciated. http://www.egroups.com/group/DEMUTH Pat Demuth
From Theresa Howieson - Thowieson@neo.rr.com When this Christiana Eve Mort married John Howieson she used may have used her maiden name on the marriage certificate but all the family records we have(notation in a bible) used the name Mort. Do you know much about Peter Mort Jr.? He was born 1824 and died 1851. The only reason I ask is that the dates are right. She married John Howieson in 1854. Thanks for your help. Theresa Christianna married John Howieson in 1854 in a place called Sand Patch, Somerset Co., Pa. Sand Patch Tunnel was a rail road tunnel at the top of the rail road line going from Md. to Pittsburgh. A small settlement developed around this junction. In the 18800 census for Clearfield Co. West Houtzdale, Pa. she was living with 4 of her children Alex 19, Christina 15, James 11, and Robert 10. Her oldest son John was already married as was her eldest daughter Elizabeth Watchman ne.Howieson. Jennette Tibbins ne. Howieson was another daughter already married by 1880. In the 1900 census she is living alone and reportedly had 8 children with 4 still living. That is only 7 children that we know of so possibly this Ann was already dead. I have been unable to find anything in the census records in Pa. Somerset, Clearfield, or Cambria Co.s.before 1880. John died in 1871 while in Scotland and according to some deeds for Clearfield, purchased property in that county from her son John and his wife Mary. I am presuming that when she married John she was a widow and been married to one of the Morts. In the 1900 census she is reported to have been born in England and immigrated in 1840. If her maiden name was not Mort, it would explain why I have been unable to find her in any passenger lists for that year. In the 1900 census she is reported to be 72 Being born April of 1828. I hope we have some luck. These ancestors have been difficult to track down. Thanks for your help. Theresa
