Jennie A. Mort
Jennie A., only daughter of Conrad and Sarah Mort was born neat Pittsburg, Iowa, December 9, 1854, and died at the home of her brother James Mort in Milton, Iowa November 2, 1918, age 63 years, 10 months and 23 days.       With the exception of some time spent in California her home has been in this community. Of recent years much of her time being spent in the home of her niece, Mrs. Floyd Kerr, who was to Aunt Jennie as a loving daughter.       After finishing the rural school work, she attended the Keosauqua high school and was later a student at the Troy academy, and often referred to the joys of school life and the friendships formed while there.       When a young girl of 14 years, Jennie gave her heart to God and consecrated her life to his service, uniting with the M.E. church at Pittsburg and remaining a faithful member of this church until the close of life.       About 6 years ago she suffered a great affliction in the loss of her sight and while she felt this loss keenly, she was never heard to murmur or complain and bore her affliction with a submission and calmness that was characteristic of her life.       During her last illness she expressed her thankfulness that she had made her peace with God while in health and assured her friend that she was ready and willing to go to the Father.       She leaves five brothers to mourn the loss of a loving sister. Christian of Portland, Oregon, Joseph of Rialto, California, Aaron of Hill City, Kansas, and William and James of this county. These brothers with their families and many neighbors and friends while feeling a personal loss, will cherish the memory of one, who with Christian sympathy and love, helped to smooth the rough places of life, make the dark places less gloomy and the bright spots more cheerful.       Her life patterned after the perfect life of Christ, has been indeed beautiful.       Funeral services were held at Pittsburg, conducted by Rev. Amsmuth. Text: "He Leadeth Me Beside the Still Water." Interment in the Pittsburg cemetery.

Thomas Elmer Mort 1872-1914

Thomas Elmer Mort was born February 21, 1872, and departed this life at Keosauqua, Iowa, Apr. 11, 1914, being 42 years 1 month and 20 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Mort was born in Page County, Iowa. When about 11 years old his mother died, and shortly thereafter his father and family came to this County, where the decedent has lived since, except for a few months in Oklahoma in search of health. On April 21, 1897 he was married to Addie Teal of near Utica, Iowa, who survived him. To this union were born two children, Leo, aged fifteen, and Maude, aged eight years. On Christmas day 1907, Mr. Mort and his brother-in-law J. H. Teal, were out hunting and the gun carried by him was accidently discharged and the load struck Mr. Teal in the ankle. The shock from this accident was so great to the nervous system that, within a few days, he was so nervous that he was unable to do any work, and has gradually grown worse since that time. On or about September, 1913, he was compelled to take his bed and has been an invalid ever since. During all his sickness he was a patient sufferer, never uttering a word of complaint, and retained great hope for his recovery until within a few days of his death. In 1912 he was elected county recorder, but was never able to take up active control of the office. In addition to his wife and two children, he leaves to mourn his death his father, step-mother, three sisters and one brother and many other relatives and also a host of admiring friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Methodist church and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was also a member of the order of Knights of Pythias. Brief funeral services were held at the residence Sunday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. in charge of Rev. Behrens from whence the body was taken to the Miller Chapel near the birthplace of Mrs. Mort, where the services were held in the church, conducted by Rev. Bowles of Stockport, following which the body was buried in hands of Odd Fellows in the church cemetery.

Phebe A. Shons Gray 1822-1906

MRS. PHEBE GRAY

Phebe A. Shons was born Aug. 22, 1822, near Ithaca, Togo County, N. Y., and departed this life at her home in Milton, Iowa, March 6, 1906. When 13 years of age, she with her parents moved to Pennsylvania where she was converted and joined the M. E. church at the age of 17, and for 66 years has been a faithful and consistant member of the same.       In 1839 she was married to S. C. Gray. To this union were born nine children four of whom with the husband and father preceeded her to the better land, two children dying in infancy and two daughters after maturity.       In 1867 the family moved to Iowa and settled on the farm near this place. The husband and father was called home in 1871 and aunt Phebe, as so many loved to call her, lived on the old home place until 13 years ago when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. J. C. Mort, and has ever since made her permanent home with them. How she loved the old church at Bethel, and how often she spoke of the friends and neighbors, so we know her affections were there where she had lived so long.       She passed away as easily as though she were going to sleep, just a few short breaths and the spirit was in heaven, and all pain and suffering at an end, ready to welcome us when our life's journey is ended.       The funeral service was held in her old home church, Bethel, near Pittsburg, conducted by her pastor, J. W. Carson.

Mary Jane — maryjane@macomb.com Surname: MORT, OAKMAN, WHITE

My husband is a descendant of Jacob B MORT. Our dates match yours. We do not have an obituary, but have burial at Majorville Cemetery (Hancock Twp, Hancock Co IL) 68 yr - 11mo - 13/15 da. Jacob reportedly lived in Hancock County, "Fountain Green Twp, near Joetta, IL." We do have a photo of him. We have numerous descendants listed, children, grandchildren & others. Do you have a birthplace more specific than Pennsylvania for Jacob B. MORT? My notes show a Jacob MORT in 1840 Bedford Co PA census, Dublin Township as 1 male 20-30. I do have the 1870 Hancock Co IL census listing for Jacob MORT & wife, Jane with 10 children. They had more children after that, according to Jane OAKMAN MORT's obituary. Their daughter, Mary Frances MORT, was my husband's grt-grandmother, married to Samuel McGee WHITE.

Abraham Betzner

Abe Betzner died of complications of old age Friday, at the home of Mr. Elmer Mort, while Mr. Betzner was not confined to his bed for any length of time, he has been gradually failing.  Abraham Betzner was a native of Maryland.  Born August 31. 1837 died Nov 14, 1919.  Aged 82 years, 2 months and 14 days.  His parents, John G. Betzner and Ustina Keller, were natives of Germany and immigrated to this country in 1834.  They moved direct from Maryland to Miami county in 1844 and first located where the Wallick’s mill used to stand and there lived four years and operated the Godfroy saw mill, which he rented.  In 1844 his parents moved to the farm in Washington township two miles northeast of Bunker Hill, where the subject of this sketch and his mother lived until her death about sixteen years ago, being 93 years of age.  His father, John G. Betzner, died July 13, 1895, lacking only four months of being 90 years of age.  Abraham Betzner had seven brothers and sisters, only one of which survives—Harmon Betzner of Bunker Hill.  The last died years ago.  Mr. Betzner since his mother’s death has been living on the farm with Mr.& Mrs. Elmer Mort, where he always was deeply interested in farming until old age kept him from doing so.  The funeral services were held at the Mort home at 10 o’clock A.M., Sunday, November 17th, conducted by Rev. H. C. Becket of the Universalist Church at Galveston and the body was laid to rest in the Mt. Hope cemetery, near his old home, where he located when first coming to this community.  Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Wm Stark of Dayton, Ohio, John Betzner of Chicago, John Kurtz, wife, and daughter of near Greentown.

This form will be open to anyone with an interest in family history. Some of the things that I will be posting to the website are obituaries and queries. There are other features on this site that will be used at a later date, as time permits. Under the “Links” area I hope to add URL links to DEMUTH related sites, ANYONE with a appropriate link may add it to this area. Under the “Files” area of the web site I hope to post a small description of each “Demuth Family Line”. This may even be an area where complete listing of various family lines could be posted. From: Glenys Rasmussen - glenys@quietAcre.com We are searching for Christiana Eve Mort bn either Apr 1828 in England (as given by her in the 1900 census of Clearfield Co. PA) or 1830 in Maryland (as given by a family member). She married John Howieson of Scotland in 1854 in Sand Patch, Somerset Co. PA and died 1916 in Clearfield Co. PA. John died in Scotland in 1871 while visiting family members. If you can help me with Christiana, I would be most grateful. Glenys
From Theresa Howieson - Thowieson@neo.rr.com When this Christiana Eve Mort married John Howieson she used may have used her maiden name on the marriage certificate but all the family records we have(notation in a bible) used the name Mort. Do you know much about Peter Mort Jr.? He was born 1824 and died 1851. The only reason I ask is that the dates are right. She married John Howieson in 1854. Thanks for your help. Theresa Christianna married John Howieson in 1854 in a place called Sand Patch, Somerset Co., Pa. Sand Patch Tunnel was a rail road tunnel at the top of the rail road line going from Md. to Pittsburgh. A small settlement developed around this junction. In the 1880 census for Clearfield Co. West Houtzdale, Pa. she was living with 4 of her children Alex 19, Christina 15, James 11, and Robert 10. Her oldest son John was already married as was her eldest daughter Elizabeth Watchman ne.Howieson. Jennette Tibbins ne. Howieson was another daughter already married by 1880. In the 1900 census she is living alone and reportedly had 8 children with 4 still living. That is only 7 children that we know of so possibly this Ann was already dead. I have been unable to find anything in the census records in Pa. Somerset, Clearfield, or Cambria Co.s.before 1880. John died in 1871 while in Scotland and according to some deeds for Clearfield, purchased property in that county from her son John and his wife Mary. I am presuming that when she married John she was a widow and been married to one of the Morts. In the 1900 census she is reported to have been born in England and immigrated in 1840. If her maiden name was not Mort, it would explain why I have been unable to find her in any passenger lists for that year. In the 1900 census she is reported to be 72 Being born April of 1828. I hope we have some luck. These ancestors have been difficult to track down. Thanks for your help. Theresa

From: Loretta Dunham Lorettadunham@aol.com I don't have any Morts in my direct line, but two of my relatives married Morts. Sophia and Mary Keller (sisters) both married Morts. They lived in Montgomery County Ohio for a while before moving to Miami County IN with the rest of their families. I have copies of both ladies' obituaries if you are interested. Sophia Catherine Keller married William Mort 29 Feb 1844 Maria Magdalena Keller married Ephraim Mort 31 Aug 1843 I have the Keller family traced back to Germany, if you are interested. Their parents were William Frederick Keller and Anna Maria Baumann. Unfortunately I don't have much more on the Baumann family (had traced the Keller family back on another line when I found that William was also related). William Frederick Keller's wife was a Baumann. They were from Bernbach, Germany. You can post the information on your site and if someone would like to contact me for Betzner or Keller, I'd love to hear from them. I don't have much on the Morts, so folks might be disappointed. I have Frances R. Beechley as the first wife of George Mort. I got it from the Miami County marriage records that are listed in books at Ft. Wayne library. She was buried in Sharpee Cem. I'll dig up the listing and forward to you. Loretta Dunham, 6277 Mercedes, Plymouth, MI 48170
