In 2006 I converted the Mort Family data on the computer from Family Roots to The Master Genealogist. Still lots of clean up to do and editing before the reports become meaningful to read but there are now 13,000 names in the data base. Check the Index of Names for the latest list. The previously unindexed parents of the those you married into the family are now being added and information posted for the last 10 or so years to the website will be added as times allows .

Adam SNOOK & others vs Margaret MORT & John MORT of Christopher - Folio 197-204 dtd 12 May 1817

This bill was filed to obtain decree for sale. Margaret MORT and John MORT of Christopher were said to be "out of the state of Maryland" and were minors and needed a guardain assigned. All plantiffs and defendants were tenants-in-common. (Oddly, I did not find the parents of these individuals noted even though it appeared to me they were brothers and sisters.)

Land - part of tract "Morts Lott" which was part of "Resurvey on Mackey's Choice" (100 ac); "Resurvey on Welsh Cabin"(8 3/4 ac); "Resurvey on Mackey's Choice" (12 3/4 ac); part of "Long Snake" (22 1/2 ac); all contiguous.

Sale was published in the Political Examiner in Fredericktown and continued til October. Sale was held in Middleburgh on 14 Jan 1818 with Adam SNOOK being the highest bidder paying $3,280.36.

(I didn't find the exact relationship to Adam SNOOK noted - perhaps he was the husband to a deceased sister or was a neighbor who had bought out some of the others. It was stated he possessed three undivided parts of 7 parts which may indicate he had bought out two other siblings or was a neighbor and bought out three of the heirs.

Heirs listed -

"Mr. Putman was married to Bessie N. Mort, daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Pusey) Mort. Her father was a prominent farmer of Loy's Station, Creagerstown District. She is also a member of the Lutheran Church. There is no issue by this union."

"WILLIAM HENRY MORT, who is among the prosperous and esteemed citizens of Woodsboro District, owns 177 acres of fine land, situated five miles north of the town of Woodsboro. Here he has resided since a boy of four or five years. He was born on the Walter farm in Emmittsburg District, Frederick County, January 16, 1850. He is a son of William and Catharine (Oler) Mort.

"George Mort, the grandfather of William H. Mort, was a day laborer. He was twice married. His first wife was a Miss Fox, a sister of Balser Fox, of the neighborhood of Creagerstown. After her death, Mr. Mort was married again. By the first marriage, he had one child, William, and by the second he was the father of several children.

"William Mort, son of George Mort, was an infant when his mother died and he was taken by an aunt. He lived among strangers until he went to his trade. He was given a common school education and when about fourteen years old went to learn the trade of a stone mason. This occupation he followed for many years, until he bought a farm, now owned by his son. Even afterwards he engaged at his trade occasionally. When he finished his trade he did not have money enough to buy tools. For a time he worked for William Ogle, a contractor at Union Bridge. Mr. Mort also did some contracting for himself, erecting many lime kilns. After his marriage, he made his home at various places until 1854, when he purchased the place on which he lived until he retired to Thurmont. At that place he died in 1887, and is buried at Rocky Cemetery. He used his influence to advance the interests of the Republican party. He held membership in the Lutheran Church. Mr. Mort was married near Bridgeport, Frederick County, to Catharine Oler, who was born and raised near that place. Her parents were Frederick and Peggy (Lynn) Oler. She died at her sister's, Mrs. Powell, near Creagerstown, in 1889. She was a Lutheran in religion. By this marriage were born four children; Frances Anna, the wife of Simon Lohr, of Thurmont; Frederick, who died at Loy's Station, Frederick County, married Mary Pusey; William Henry; and George, died aged two years.

"William Henry Mort, son of William and Catharine (Oler) Mort, received his education at Grove's Academy near his home. At the age of twenty he quit school. He worked for his father on the farm until he was thirty-six years old. After his marriage in 1886, he worked away from the home farm for three years. He then bought the homestead, and here he has since been engaged in rural pursuits. His home was built in the early forties by John Miller. The barn was put up by his father in 1870. Mr. Mort is a farmer who thoroughly understands his vocation and he received large returns from his labors. He is highly thought of in the community in which he resides.

"In 1886, Mr. Mort was married to Seraphine Elizabeth Ceas, daughter of Nathaniel and Rebecca Ann (McKissick) Ceas. She is a native of Hauver's District, Frederick County. Mr. and Mrs. Mort are affiliated with the Luth- eran Church at Rocky Ridge, in which he has served in the capacity of a deacon several times. They have no issue."

High School Sports
Basketball 4A Region Playoffs
Freshman's Heroics Propel Rangers

Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 02.08.2007

By Tyler Hansen

Rincon/University freshman Alyssa Mort looked around for assurance, not sure she could handle the pressure heaped on her shoulders Wednesday.
Here was the situation: down by one to Pueblo with no time on the clock and two free throws coming. Make them both and Rincon earns a spot in the state tournament. Miss them, and the season likely is over.
    Swish. Swish.
Mort's heroics saved Rincon in a 41-40 win in the first round of the 4A Sonoran Region tournament at Marana High School, and capped a bizarre series of events.
"I was freaking out," Mort said while wiping away tears. "I had to try to ignore everyone. I tried not to think about missing."
Her jumping, high-arching shots from the line secured the third-seeded Rangers (13-10) a spot in next week's 4A-I state playoffs.
After Claudia Figueroa made two foul shots to give Pueblo a 40-39 lead with 8.2 seconds left, Rincon struggled to get a good look as time ticked away.
Mort finally got the ball on the baseline, drove toward the hoop and took a shot as the buzzer sounded. It rattled in. One referee waved it off, while the other counted it.
While Pueblo celebrated wildly, the officials conferred and said the shot did not count. But they decided Pueblo's Michelle Yanez had fouled Mort during her shot.
In a flash, Pueblo (13-11) had its ticket to the state playoffs taken away.
"If we make a few more free throws, it doesn't even come down to that call," Warriors coach Ray Brown said. "The girls got their hearts ripped out. That's all I can say."

FATAL WRECK.

Engineer J. D. Mort Killed Near Van Dyke Tower, East of Lewistown.

J. D. Mort, 1212 Thirteenth avenue, an engineer on the Middle division, was
instantly killed and his fireman, J. C. Mediegh, also of this city, was
slightly hurt in a wreck a short distance east of Van Dyke tower, east of
Mifflin, Saturday afternoon.

Engineer Mort, with engine 1553, was was ging [sic] east, running light,
and, just after passing the tower mentioned, the rails buckled, throwing the
track out of alignment. The engine left the rails, topped over and crashed
into a freight train also going east, wrecking sixteen loaded cars. The
engineer was caught under the engine and instantly killed, his body being
literally roasted by the escaping steam. Fireman Medeigh jumped and escaped
with a broken ankle. The remains of the dead engineer were brought to the
city and given to Undertaker Lafferty, who prepared them for burial. Mr. Mort
was born June 14, 1864, in Mifflin county, and had been in the service of the
company for a number of years as a fireman, having been promoted to engineer
in November, 1902. He was the son of Jefferson and Nancy Mort, of Atkinson's
Mills, Juniata county, who survive, as do also these brothers and sisters:
Levi, of Pittsburg; Jackson, James and Charles, of Saxton, Bedford county;
Mrs. William Sherdon, of this city; Mrs. Susan Mitchell, of Lewistown, and
Mrs. Lizzie Wertz, of Mapleton. His wife, who is totally blind, and four
children survive. They are: William H., Edna, Foster and Florence Pearl. He
was a consistent member of Trinity Reformed church, the Brotherhood of Firemen
and of the Pennsylvania railroad relief. The funeral will take place this
afternoon from the late residence. Services will be conducted at 2.30 by Rev.
Lewis Robb. Interment will be made in Hutchison's cemetery, Juniata.

Having A Ball
TERESA CARRANO, Times-Union Lifestyles Editor

PIERCETON - Preparation for the ball takes about two hours, as any female re-inactor knows. Then, after all this work, one can forget one's pocket and have to practically start all over again.

Pheta Mort, commander of the Virginia State Navy Unit of the North West Territory Alliance (NWTA), knows the perils of preparing for a ball.

This weekend, Mort and other re-inactors are set for the eighth annual Back To The Days of Kosciuszko, a celebration of the memory of Tadeusz Kosciusko, Polish Revolutionary War military encampment and colonial fair.

The weekend's highlight is the Grand Ball Saturday, reputed to be one of the most well-attended balls in the Midwest.

While the public is not expected to attend in costume, the re-inactors certainly will.

Mort's sky blue silk court dress will be on display with three or four others this weekend.

One gown, made with a startling black and white patterned bodice and overskirt, doesn't seem at first to be in keeping with the supposedly drab nature of clothing 200 years ago.

This is an assumption Mort is quick to dispel.

"You can come close to neon colors with natural dyes,"

AK Educators : Going Out on a Limb for Kids

Principal Charlie Mort, Fairmount Elementary School,
Highlands Area School District

by Lara Laero

Teachers and administrators strive diligently to create new ways to spark interest in learning. To what lengths will they go? How about dressing up as Scooby Doo or a reindeer? Sound far-fetched? Not for the principal of Fairmount Elementary School (Highlands Area School District,) Mr. Charlie Mort! Students have excelled in various reading and math challenges, for the chance to glimpse Mr. Mort as both of these characters and many more. No wonder parents, teachers, and students are crazy about their new principal. His enthusiasm and exuberance for learning set a precedent for everyone in the school. With pride in his students and staff, Mr. Mort expounds on the great things happening at Fairmount Elementary.

Students and teachers are excited about the new inquiry-based science program being implemented at all Highlands elementary schools. It's the kind of enthralling hypothesizing one sees on "Bill Nye the Science Guy" or "Mythbusters." The curriculum called, Science Companion, provides for the instruction to be completely "hands-on" experimentation for the students. After discussing a set of inquiry questions, classes perform experiments to discover the answers. "One of the extra benefits," Mr. Mort relates, "is that students understand, in a much greater way, how science is connected to math." He's thrilled to see the students experimenting and learning the practical outworking of math and science in the real world.

To facilitate the hands on approach to Science, Fairmount Elementary has departmentalized the teaching. Each teacher for kindergarten through second grade conducts the Science experiments with his or her class. However, third, fourth, and fifth graders attend a science class taught by a departmental teacher. Departmentalization affords the readily available science equipment in one classroom. Another component to the program occurs is second grades, a system known as "Focus Groups." These groups provide differentiated instruction so that students work on certain skills. As students master the skill, they move on to a different skill group. Mr. Mort adds that their math instruction works in the same way, based on student needs. He notes, "It works to their advantage, because students feel success as they move out of groups." The groups function like stations, so there is no misconception of grouping at different levels.

In addition to the inquiry based program, Fairmount Elementary will be the site for an outdoor science classroom, called the Science Zone. Mr. Mort reports, "We just had an area of the playground fenced in today. This upcoming school year, students will be able to study composting, examine worms, work with rain gauges, and even use a telescope. Mr. Mort and a science coach worked to provide this outdoor facility for students from all the Highland's elementary buildings to use.

To build reading and math skills, Mr. Mort keeps the students inspired to reach their goals in various challenges. This is the area where his willingness to be a little crazy creates an excellent incentive for kids to excel. At Christmas Mr. Mort dressed up as a reindeer, at Easter he donned a big bunny suit, and recently he let the staff paint his hair as blue as Babe the Blue Ox! These were awards for students learning math facts or reading a certain number of books. For the blue hair, students had to purchase and read books from the Book Fair as well as complete a "Reading Counts" quiz for each book. Over 300 books were purchased and read. He has even dressed up as Scoobie Doo! One of the students" favorites, however, was the Fear Factor Challenge against another principal. The two ate worms (gummy, of course), had scooter races, blindfolded events, and even a Tug of War. Mr. Mort explains, "I like to go out on a limb for the kids. I tell them, 'If you work hard for me, I'll work hard for you.'"

Along with being principal, Mr. Mort also holds other important positions. He is the Homeless Liaison for homeless students in the district. We help them find homes, and I oversee providing them transportation and any other needs they may have." In addition, he is the Co-Transportation Director and the Overseer for the Science Department for all the elementary buildings. On top of this, he finds time to be a dedicated father of four children, Bethany, 11, Jacob,8, Cullen, 3, and Aiden, one and half years old. He and his wife, Kristen, enjoy attending the children's little league soccer and baseball games. To volunteer his time, he has served as a coach for little league teams in the past.

Mr. Mort praises the staff he works with for being so positive. To keep everyone on a quest to be kind, students and staff are awarded each month with the Pledge Keeper Award. Every morning the students say a pledge that they will do their best and follow rules of character such as integrity, kindness, and fairness. Once a month, Mr. Mort gives about 15 Pledge Keepers awards for students and faculty.

Expounding on the most rewarding aspect of his job, Mr. Mort says, "Knowing that there are children here who need me, and that I can be here for these kids. I love being here every day. I love working with kids and parents. The hugs and handshakes that I get in the hall are BIG. They keep me coming back."

Those interested in seeking the scholarship should contact Nancy Bakehouse for an application at the Malvern Community High School (712/624-8645) or (712-624-8956) when school adjourns. Applications are due June 30, 2001, with selection at the end of July.

Buena Vista University, student, Kathryn Marie Taenzler, received last year's $500 Student Teaching Scholarship. Daughters, Chelly Mort Kenney and Dru Mort Sampson, both graduates of Malvern Community High School, established a memorial scholarship called The George and R. Charlotte Mort Endowed Education Scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of a Mills County, Iowa high school pursuing a teaching degree at the college or university of his/her choice. The award is made in the student?s last year of college during his/her student teaching semester(s).

Applicants are asked to explain why they need the George and R. Charlotte Mort Endowed Education Scholarship and how it will help them achieve their goals. Preference will be given to a Malvern Community High School graduate who aspires to teach at the elementary level or in the industrial arts area but all other qualified individuals pursing degrees in education will be considered.

Long-time residents of Mills County, the Morts were well known in the educational community. Charlotte Mortbegan her teaching career in rural Mills County after receiving her two-year teaching credential from Peru State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska. She later completed her B.S. in Education at Peru in 1963 and returned to teaching in the Malvern Community School District where she taught at the upper elementary and junior high levels until her retirement in 1974.

George Mort graduated from Peru State Teachers College in 1939, majoring in industrial arts with minors in history and physical education. He taught in Nebraska and Florida prior to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Mort returned to teaching in the Malvern School District in 1964 where he taught industrial arts until 1985 when he retired. The Morts continued to live in Malvern following their retirements and were involved in numerous community activities. George died in 1992 and Charlotte died in 1997.

Gammon of Glenwood, Vice Chair, Helen Pollock of rural Malvern; Secretary/Treasurer, Bach Bakehouse of rural Hastings; Quentin Johnson of Emerson and Jim Richter of rural Glenwood. Contact: Dennis N. I stopped for a few days in Salt Lake for the specific purpose of using the genealogical library there in the hope that I would find great-grampa, Llewellyn Mort (born 1846), living with his parents in the 1851 census of England and Wales. Well, I didn't find him, but I did find a number of other Mordecais and Morts in the 1851 and 1861 censuses including a heretofore unknown Llewellyn Mort; that is, unknown to me, anyway. Here below is what I found:
