Wow. I am so impressed! I am looking for: FRANCES MORTE, born 1788 in Virginia. She came to Green County, Kentucky about 1814 with her husband (whose name apparently was RINOD) and two children. She had another child in 1815, and then married Abraham CLARK on 6 July 1816. The marriage record stated she was Franky RINOD. The three children took the name of Clark, and were raised by Abraham and Frances. Frances and Abraham Clark were still living in the 1850 census -- hence the information as to birth and birthplace. The reason I know she was a Morte is, that on a church record when their daughter was living in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, she gave her parents' names as Abraham Clark and Frances Morte (the maiden name was requested). The name could have been MORTE or MARTE (couldn't really tell, but I assume it to be Morte). I have often wondered if it was a derivation of something else like Morten or Marten. (I've wondered about the name RINOD. Could it be Renauld? Reynold? or ???) This is all I know. I have absolutely no clues where in Virginia. I hope you can help me Enclosed is five dollars and a self addressed stamped envelope. If you care to correspond with me by E Mail, my address is dorothyw@slkc.uswest.net. Thank you. Henry Steiner, Reg'r. ----------------------------------------------------- OHS ResourcesLike many sons of pioneers, Mr. Holmes obtained an education with difficulty. During the winter months he attended the public schools, working on the farm the remainder of the year. He was fond of books and of study, and made the most of the opportunities presented to him. He would go many miles to attend a debating society and was an expert speller. After he was 21 years of age he attended Granville academy and Wheaton college, working at the same time in order to pay for his board, tuition and clothing. After two years at Wheaton he taught school in his home district. He then began to read law in his leisure moments. In 1865, he came to Iowa, and in the following year located permanently at Hamburg, which was then a village of very few houses. For two years he read law in the office of R. K. Crandall, when he entered the law department of the State university and graduated in 1868. He returned to Hamburg and formed a partnership with Mr. Crandall. He was afterwards associated in the firms of Holmes & Simons, Dalby & Holmes, and Holmes & French, all leading law firms of southwestern Iowa. During the past eleven years he has been alone in the practice. Mr. Holmes has one of the largest offices and one of the most complete law libraries in that part of the state. He has been retained as counsel in many important cases in the district, supreme and United States courts. For twelve years Mr. Holmes held the office of United States commissioner, but resigned the position in order to devote all his time to his profession. He is the author of the well-known book, Township Laws of Iowa which has run through two large editions.
For ten years he was vice-president and president of the Farmers and Merchants bank, of Hamburg. During recent years he has devoted some of his time to developing one of the largest fruit farms in the state. He was married in August, 1864, to Sarah B. Hewitt. They have six children, Abraham Lincoln, William Thomas, Mary Elizabeth, now the wife of Rev. Evore Evans, Jesse George, Samuel Arthur and Sarah Marcia. Mr. Holmes is a liberal man and no advanced course for human good has ever appealed in vain to him. He has the loving regard of all his fellow citizens. In a comfortable home, his children a credit to him, a handsome competence for his old age, he is enjoying the results of a life well spent in the service of the Master and his fellow-men.

ALEXANDER CAMERON, EDUCATOR FOR 35 YEARS IN SEATTLE SCHOOLS
Obituary: Alexander D. Cameron was a promising young football player on
the Minnesota Iron Range in the 1920s. The dean at Hibbing Junior College
suggested he might want to head out West, to play for the team at the University
of Washington.
So Mr. Cameron and two friends piled into a Model T in 1928, embarking on
an adventure that consumed eight days, 109 gallons of gasoline and 22 quarts of
oil.
Once Mr. Cameron arrived in Washington, he stayed, spending 35 years as a
teacher, counselor, vice principal and principal in the Seattle schools.
Mr. Cameron died Sunday (Dec. 12). He was 87.
His memorial service yesterday featured a bagpipe, champagne and readings
from Mr. Cameron's memoirs. "He wanted a blowout," said his daughter, Anne
Schoedel.
Mr. Cameron was born in Scotland, but emigrated with his family when he was
1 1/2. They were bound for British Columbia but never got past the Iron Range
in northern Minnesota.
Mr. Cameron's father was a railroad worker, and the family lived in isolated
places. Schoedel said her father remembered being chased by wolves as he
pumped a railroad handcart down the tracks. He excelled in football, hockey and track.
While football brought Mr. Cameron to Seattle, he played for the Huskies only briefly.
He graduated from the University of Washington in 1931, taking his first
teaching job at the state School for the Blind in Vancouver.
He and another teacher, Hazel Mort, married the following year.
Mr. Cameron returned to Seattle for graduate work and began teaching in the
Seattle in 1936 at B.F. Day, then a pre-vocational school. He received his
master's degree from the University of Washington in 1938.
Mr. Cameron taught science at John Marshall Junior High for 14 years and
served as a counselor at Hamilton Junior High for three more before entering
administration as vice principal at James Monroe Junior High in 1955.
In his memoirs, Mr. Cameron wrote of paddling the posteriors of several
particularly troublesome boys at Monroe with a tennis shoe to keep them in line. When
he left the school, the faculty presented him with a tennis shoe mounted in a
shadow box "for services rendered."
Mr. Cameron became principal at Blaine Junior High in 1959, moving to
a similar position at Denny Junior High in 1961. He spent the final nine years of his
career as principal at Eckstein, then the largest junior high school in the state,
before retiring in 1971.
Aurlo Bonney, a fellow junior-high principal, said Mr. Cameron "came through
as a quiet person, and yet he was pretty slick with a joke. He wore well."
Mr. Cameron believed in "keeping the whole operation under control, so students
could learn and teachers could teach," Bonney said.
After his first wife died, Mr. Cameron married Lucile "Bonnie" Dewey in 1971.
They traveled extensively after he retired, visiting England and Scotland, where
Mr. Cameron had many relatives.
He also enjoyed golf, fishing and bowling.
Survivors include his widow, of Seattle; a brother, David Cameron of Gibsonia, Pa.;
a son, Alexander "Sandy" Cameron, Jr., of Federal Way; a daughter, Anne
Schoedel of Valleyford, Spokane County; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances to the Children's Hospital Foundation or
the Kenney Home.

Obituary of Bishop John Mort The first Bishop of Northern Nigeria
August 05, 1997 The Daily Telegraph London Page: 19
Obituary: THE RIGHT REVEREND JOHN MORT, who has died aged 82, was for
17 years Bishop of Northern Nigeria and afterwards Assistant Bishop in
the Leicester Diocese for 16 years.
Mort went out to the newly created Diocese of Northern Nigeria as its first Bishop
in 1952. He was only 37, and his jurisdiction extended over an area of some
250,000 square miles. The population of 30 million was almost entirely Muslim
or pagan.
Under Mort's leadership, significant Christian progress was made, and by the
mid-1960s there were 17 mission stations with upwards of 30 churches and a
leprosy settlement. However, the Nigerian civil war had a devastating effect
on the North, and from 1966 many Christians migrated to the South and East for
safety.
In 1972, not long after Mort had returned from West Africa, the then Bishop of
Leicester, Ronald Williams, engaged him as his Assistant Bishop - Leicester
being one of the few English dioceses without a Suffragan.
Mort became not only a highly effective pastoral bishop in the parishes, but
was universally liked throughout the county. He had a remarkable memory for names
and places; churchwardens would be astonished to be asked about the progress of
their children in particular schools.
John Ernest Llewelyn Mort, the son of a mining engineer, was born in South Wales
on April 13 1915. From Malvern he went up to St Catharine's College,
Cambridge, where he read History, and then to Westcott House to prepare for Holy
Orders.
From 1940 to 1944, Mort was curate at Dudley St Thomas, Worcestershire, where
he received a rigorous training. His ability as a preacher may have owed
something to the memory of an occasion when, just hitting his stride in the pulpit
at Dudley, he was interrupted by the vicar with: "Is there much more of this?"
He next spent four years as the Worcester Diocesan youth organiser, and another four
as Vicar of the parish of St John the Baptist, Worcester.
Throughout this time he served also as Private Chaplain to the Bishop of Worcester,
Dr William Wilson Cash, who had previously been General Secretary of the
Church Missionary Society.
Bishop Cash observed that his young chaplain had vision and a gift for turning people
to faith through pastoral friendship, and on the strength of this he
recommended Mort for appointment to the new missionary Diocese of Northern Nigeria.
The appointment involved travelling great distances to the mission stations, and Mort
was often accompanied by his wife Barbara, who played a full-time part in
the Church's work, and eventually became head of Capital School, Kaduna,
pioneering the co-education of Nigerians and expatriate children.
A training centre for lay evangelists was established at Wusasa Zana, and a
bishop's house was built at
Kaduna. Mort's efforts were recognised by his appointment as CBE in 1965
and by the award of an honorary LLD by Ahmadu Bello University when he left in
1970.
As Assistant Bishop in Leicester, Mort was provided with a base and an
income by his appointment as a Canon Residentiary of Leicester Cathedral,
a post he held from 1970 to 1988. Although his ministry was mainly in the diocese,
he was assiduous in performing his cathedral duties, as Treasurer and as the pastoral
friend of the congregation.
Of a broadly conservative disposition, Mort had during his time in Nigeria
strongly opposed a scheme for uniting the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian
churches there. He was unhappy about the Church of England's decision to
ordain women.
Towards the end of his life Mort suffered from severe arthritis, but he continued to
assist in his local parish church at Woodhouse Eaves.
He is survived by his wife.

George and Nancy Openshaw
Weber County
Nancy Ingham was born in this little place on January 23, 1821, and she
followed the popular occupation of the day. One
can easily imagine that it was in the great mill where she worked that she
became acquainted with George Openshaw who
was also a weaver and lived in the nearby small village of Heap where
George was born Aug. 15, 1817. They were
married in 1845, probably in the Church of England, for Nancy was a Sunday
School teacher in that faith and also sang in
the choir. They must have heard the gospel from the missionaries soon
afterward as George was baptized by Brother
George Mort on October 7, 1848. Edith Smith Truman

Dear Mr. Gradeless,
I'm researching Roy A. Mort, who was born in Ohio on 7-28-1889, and died
in Glendale, California on 1-12-75. I see that he is listed in the Mort
Family as record number 1920. I am restoring a home that Mr. Mort and his
wife (Laurel M. Goodwin Mort) built in Glendale, California in 1925. It is
a very interesting "castle" style home, and was nominated as a Glendale
historical landmark. The Glendale Historical Society and I would like to
find out as much as we can about the original owners and their family. I
have learned that Mr. Mort was the son of William Arthur Mort, born around
1870. The family lived in the Lima, Ohio area. Roy and Laurel Mort had no
children, which makes it rather difficult to find any information. I have
been able to locate a great-niece of Mrs. Mort, but no living relatives of
Mr. Mort. Any information that you can provide on Mr. Mort would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Betty Mort Mumper - buried at the newest Blain Cemetery (don't know if this
has a particular name) 1923-1994
Betty died of cancer - if you are tracking any type of medical information,
not sure what kind though. Her husband Benjamin's name is also on the stone
with a birthdate of 1918. He still lives in New Germantown. It is real
interesting that in their later lives these people were weavers. I have a rug
I use at Christmas time that they made. Ben researched on this trade and has
these looms (some very large) in a building on their property.
My mother and I had various conversations about Catharine Mort Yohn. Catharine
attended many of our family gatherings. Only now do I realize she was a cousin
to my grandmother. The George I told you about was probably a boyfriend but in
those days you didn't proclaim that you lived with somebody. Catharine's
husband had to be still living but I never remember seeing him. George's last
name was either Berkepile or Berkebile. I was given some old photos that I
brought home to scan and return. One of them has Catharine on it. If you are
interested I can scan it and send a copy. That cemetery in Blain was full of
names I knew or have heard. Kind of like old home week. I had hoped to do more
research but spent all my time with the folks. Maybe next trip. If I can think
of anything else I will be in touch. Mom and I talked about so many things.
Beverly
Simon Sylvester Mort and wife Matilda Jane were also buried in this same
cemetery.

Bill & Donald,
Finished travelling for a while so I plan to include your info and
contact Emails in a revised MORT page in the next few days.
The person who related the 3 brothers in Glamorgan tale was Geoff N Lee,
8 Eton Street, Barry, South Glamorgan, CF6 8PH, Wales if you would like
to follow up. I don't believe he knew much more than the story. I have
absolutely no idea why the name should change from MORDECAI unless it
was a coincidence and no relation to early MORT names. Could be red
herring of massive proportions unless we find the root of the tale.
I did contact a Mrs L V Gallenti at 36 Old Kurrajong Road, Richmond, NSW
2753 in Australia a year ago but got no reply. She was looking for
MORDECAI in Glamorgan around 1850.
Let's keep in touch in case any of us get a clue or two. This Email
below preferred. I'm slowly updating my WebPages........

Thank you for providing so much information on Roy A. Mort and his family.
You certainly have an impressive site on the Mort family history, and you
have obviously done a tremendous amount of research in order to document
the family through so many generations. I apologize for having taken so
long to respond, but I have limited computer access (I don't have my own
computer yet), and I'm afraid I haven't been able to gather much
information on Roy Mort since I first sent you a query.
I was informed by relatives of Laurel Mort, Roy Mort's second wife, that
Roy and Laurel Mort had no children, but they did not indicate that he had
a previous marriage and a son from that marriage. After learning from you
that Roy Mort had living relatives, grandsons Don Jr. and Bill, I tried to
contact both without success. However, I was able to locate the widow of
their father, Don Mort, Sr. Mrs. Mort told me that Don Sr. was raised by
his mother and her second husband, Oren Long, and that there was little or
no contact between Roy Mort and his son Don after Roy was divorced from
Nellie Jones. In fact, she believes that Don only saw his father once, and
I'm not sure if that was after Roy moved to California and married Laurel
Goodwin. Mrs. Mort recalls being told that Roy Mort drove a beer delivery
truck in St. Louis in his early years. You probably know all of this,
since you were in contact with Don Sr. prior to his death in 1990.
The only other source of information that I have on Roy Mort is the death
certificate filed with real estate documents. The death certificate
indicates an initial "A" for his middle name, which you believe to be
Arthur. Oddly, it lists his birth date as 7/28/1889, while Social Security
records (and the Mort family site) give a birth year of 1891. Roy's father
is identified as William Arthur Mort, but his mother's identity is listed
as "unknown". The information on the certificate was provided by Laurel
Mort, who was reportedly in ill health at the time.
According to his death certificate, Roy was a resident of Los Angeles
County for 43 years and was employed by Sherwin-Williams Paints for 20
years as a paint salesman. This conflicts with the story I was told by the
sellers of his home and the relatives of Laurel Mort, who indicated that
Roy and Laurel Mort built the stone home, originally named "Greystone
Manor", in 1925. Although building permit records do confirm that the home
was built in 1925, the death certificate states that Roy did not reside
here until 1932. Also, real estate records show a transfer of ownership to
Roy and Laurel Mort in 1936. I have been researching Roy Mort to try to
resolve the mystery of who built the home and whether the Morts were the
original owners. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate public
records confirming the architect and original owner.
"Greystone Manor", renamed "Stoneridge Castle" by the second owners in
1978, is of Spanish Mission Revival style, and has an impressive stone
facade that gives the impression of a gothic castle. The home has many
distinctive features, such as original stained glass, hidden safes,
interior flower trays that pull out from panels under the windows, high
ceilings, and rooms with unusual shapes and dimensions. According to the
previous owners, who purchased the house from Laurel Mort's relatives in
1978, "Greystone Manor" was used as a movie location in the 1930's and was
featured in Architectural Digest. The house is listed in a popular book on
significant architecture in Southern California, and was nominated by the
Glendale Historical Society for status as a local landmark. I am in the
process of restoring the home to its original condition, including the
original wooden plaque proclaiming it "Greystone Manor". It is truly a
labor of love!
Getting back to Roy Mort, I was told by the previous owners that Roy was a
liquor salesman, which would appear to be incorrect unless this preceded
his position as a paint salesman. They also told me that he loved birds
and kept a large parakeet aviary on the property next door to his home. I
have found evidence of what appears to be an old intercom system that was
connected to the aviary, and relatives of Laurel Mort confirmed that Roy
Mort did indeed raise parakeets. The vacant lot also contained a
caretaker's cottage, which was torn down about 10 years ago. The remnants
of a plumbing system to the cottage still exist on my property, but a new
home has been built on the lot next door.
I have been told that Roy Mort loved this home dearly, and maintained the
property while caring for his wife when she was ill in later years.
Although he was well into his eighties, he was able to scale the 46 steps
from the street entrance to the front door, which is no easy task with a
handful of groceries! After Roy passed away in 1975, Mrs. Mort stayed in
the house for about a year, but her health failed and she was moved to a
rest home where she spent the last year or two of her life. The previous
owners told me that before they purchased the home, Roy Mort's cremated
ashes were kept in an urn on a ledge by the front picture window. When
Mrs. Mort passed away in 1977, she and her late husband were laid to rest
in a Glendale cemetery. I am not aware of the name of the cemetery where
they are buried, but I do know that they are not buried in Glendale Forest
Lawn Cemetery. I have been unable to locate obituaries on either Roy or
Laurel Mort in local newspapers.
This is about all that I have been able to learn about Roy and Laurel Mort,
and I do hope this information is of some use to you. Again, I appreciate
the extensive history you provided, which I found very interesting.
Sincerely, Jim Meehan

----- Notice from the obituary there are two sons. One is Charles, my Grandfather, and the other is John from Tulsa. Your information has the other son as Andrew Hisson Mort. I had sent some information awhile ago about who I thought Andrew Hisson Mort was. When Clarinda's (the obituary above) father was killed, her mother married a man named Joab Hissem (Hisson). They had only one child named Andrew "Bud" Hissem who never married. This was Clarinda's 1/2 brother. I think he showed up in the 1900 census as living with her family since his Parents were dead and he had no other family. I am still trying to find anyone related to the John from Tulas, Charles's brother. I have not had any luck. You do have John Mort (RN=6446) pension information in your 1997 research. I hope this information helps to clear some things up. Linda Mort Zahm Thank you for the information on Isabelle Mort. The date of birth matches my record for Isabella Fynes, born in Northumberland, England in 1865. I have learned a lot about the Mort families by reading through your most impressive Mort web page. However, it is not clear to me if any of the contributors are descendants of the line that includes John and Isabella Mort. Do you have any information about the families of the children of Isabella and James Mort? It would be great if I could make contact with any surviving relatives. I would also be interested to learn about the previous generations of Morts who were the ancestors of John M Mort. As promised I attach information on the parents of Isabella Fynes. This includes a couple extracts from a document that I have written which summarises the origins of my family line. The attachment is a Word document that has been zipped using WINZIP and uuencoded using XferPro as I am unable to send binary files from my Compuserve account to an Internet based e-mail system. If you have any difficulty decoding the document, or do not have access to Microsoft Word, please let me know and I will send it to you from my work's computer in whatever format you require. Documentation is needed on this family line. Do you have any? DEG] Thank you very much for the information on the Mort Family. From the dates I've collected, the information you sent me on the Mort family is what I was looking for. Abraham S. Mort could very possibly be my great- great grandfather and his daughter, Sarah E. (RN=6364), was my great grandmother. Anyway, my younger sister, found some information on the Mort family. According to her findings Abraham was born 9/16/1801 and died before 1880. With these dates, he must have been from an earlier generation. Abraham's parents were Mathias Mort and Elizabeth Bauer. They had 12 children: John, Anna Maria, Henry, Catherin, Elizabeth V, Sarah Ann, Mary Ellen, Sophia, Jeremiah, Mahaha, Eliza, and William David. Some names are the same as per your information. The selection of names must have been scarse back then. Once again, THANK YOU. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. Sincerely, Jean Shafer, Middletown, MD 21769
I was amazed when I found this web page. A lot of work I'm sure. Their has
been a new addition to my family since I last talked to you. My daughter was
born 5-18-96 her name is Jacklyn Danielle Mort [RN=7092] born
in Leesburg, FL. I still haven't heard anything about the illness that effects the
Morts from Lima, Ohio. All I know is life expectancy seems to be around the
age of 50. Thank you so much for all your hard work you've done to help me
and many others. Randy Mort, Umatilla, FL 32784 Yesterday I recieved two Obituaries one on Dewey Mort and the onter on Maggie Groves, Deweys sister. Some interesting but confusing things came up and I was wondering what you thought. Dewey died July, 1969. His address is 225 West Offutt Street, Cumberland, MD. Maggie died June 1976 and the obituary states the same address. This is the same address on my grandfathers application for SS. The obituatry states their parents as Jacob and Anise (Price) Mort. According to Maggie's obituary, (Cumberland Evening Times) June 24th 1976 she was born in Warfordsburg PA, but I have the West Virginia census and birth record stating she was born in West VA. She was the the widow of Martin VanBuren Groves. She was survived by her son, Charles H. T. Groves of Cumberland. He was probably the child listed with her on the 1920 census. And she was survived by her sister, Mrs. Arbutus Lloyd of Baltimore (probably Vina), 8 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. According to Dewey's obituary, (same paper, July 16 1969): He was a native of Cumberland. But also I have his delayed birth certificate from West Virginia. He was survived by a son, Dewey of Baltimore and 2 daughters, Vina Huff and Wanda Coalson of Walkertown NC and his sisters, Maggie and Mrs. Arbutus Lloyd of Baltimore. The really WEIRD thing is, on BOTH obituaries it lists that they are survived by their brother Leonard Mort of Chicago. But Leonard died in 1968 a year before Dewey. The only thing I can think of is if Leonard died and they had lost track of him and didn't know that he died. Or I am on the completely wrong track. . Do you have any information on a Leonard Mort in the Chicago area in the 1960's. I am very interested in tracing my relatives. Sorry for the lengthy letter, Hope to hear from you soon. It has been at least 100 evey day we could use a little cool weather from up north. Please send some. Katie West
A while back you requested any obituaries I might run across on the Morts
family. Below are the obits on Isreal Keim Morts (RN 5522) and Mary Elizabeth

census with her parents and the last name is spelled KINGSBURY.. I have also
located the marriage record and the name is also spelled KINGSBURY... and in
Ike's obit it also says he married Mary E KINGSBURY... so I have changed my
records to reflect this spelling... Where did you get the Kingsbrough spelling???
I will forward info as I run on it...Thanks Becki Verser Larson (RN 6919) Last Monday Evening He Went Into the Back of His Shoe Shop and Shot Himself Through the Heart With a Shotgun. I. K. Morts is a well-known shoemaker who had his shop in the basement of the Palace Hotel just opposite the Gazette office. Monday evening a few minutes before 6 o'clock while we were closing up for the day to go to supper, your reporter heard a report like a gun, but after a second thought concluded it was a noise made by a board falling in the Barnes' lumber yard and went on up the street. When near the post office we were overtaken by a man who said I. K. Morts had shot himself and was lying in his shop dead. When your reporter arrived only four or five men were in the home. How He Did It.
He was lying on his back with an old single barrel shot gun in front of
him and a lath near his right hand. He had evidently gone into the back room
of his shop, sat down on the floor, took the gun, placed the breech against
wall, held the muzzle against his left breast with his left hand and pushed
the trigger of the gun with the lath in his right hand. The end of the lath
was trimmed so as to hit the trigger without interfering with the guard. He
was fearfully powder burned and his clothing was considerably scorched. The
wound just over the heart was an ugly one and probably produced almost
instantaneous death. Mr. Schloser, who had left a pair of shoes to be mended
and called to get them was the first one to discover the suicide. He saw no
one in the front room and naturally took a look into the back room and saw
deceased lying dead. Mr. Reynolds called after five o'clock to have a pair of
shoes mended. Morts told Reynolds that could not do it, that he never
expected to drive another peg. A Sketch of His Life.

RThe Casselman Chronicle The Spring Historical Society of the Casselman Valley Vol XV, Nos 3 and 4. Fall and Winter 1975 Pages 4-7 by EILEEN MORT After the land was cleared, a large steam-powered sawmill was set up. A barn for the horses and a hoarding house, plus several out-houses', soon completed this establishment. One lumberman's wife became coot. housekeeper and dispenser of first aid to injured workers. Living and working together, the group formed one big rowdy family. Young woodsman Abraham lived this way as long as he remained a bachelor.. but a young lady, Ann Maria Miller. entered his life before long. She was horn in 1839. (So far, I have been unable to find any record of her parents but she did have a brother. Jeremiah.) These two were married and went to housekeeping in a house built by Abraham. The mill had been moved farther south on the Casselman River. therefore a homesite was selected to be closer to his work. This Mort homestead was situated south of the Elijah Livengood Farm on the Cast side of the river. (Today, the foundation stones can still be seen. even from the west side of the river; the bridge is gone at this particular point. but by standing there, one can envision how it looked long ago. Some apple trees of a perhaps once well-tended orchard still remain.) Abrahams Family Abrahams first child, Nancy, was born here and in 1862 another girl, Sara Ellen. was born. On October 22, 1864 a son arrived who was named Andrew Jackson but through the years used the name John. Of course. his nickname became Jack Two more boys, William and Jeremiah,. completed the first half of the Mort family. During this time, Rumbaugh and Stoner Lumber Company took over the mill and were cutting timber as far south as the Sim Loechel place. A railroad spur had been built and it was Abraham's job to run the dinghy. loaded with lumber. from the sawmill to a railroad junction near the "Yellow House", a tavern north of Salisbury on the old road near where the Harry Kretchman home is located. there the lumber was loaded on railroad cars for shipment to parts unknown. In the year 1886, the Mort family moved away from their river home (probably the mill had moved on) and settled near Springs, Pa., on the farm where Harvey Bender now lives. Their sixth child, Mary Ann, was born here in 1867, followed by Susann, Elizabeth, Martha and Abraham II, completing the family circle of ten children. Their Church Life Among Elmer Bittinger's treasures of yesterday, I found an original copy of the Sunday School register for the Folk Mennonite Church, dated 1882 on which are listed five pupils from the Mort family. John, age 18 at that time, was in the male class taught by Jonas Keim. Mary was in a class taught by Carrie Blough and Lizzie's teacher was Katy Folk. The infant class, taught by Jacob Folk, lists William and Jerry.
Evidently Ann Maria's family were members of the Brethren Church at Salisbury or the River Bridge Church. (This was first the German Baptist Church "Rever Brick Kahrich the junction of Ord Street and the St. Paul Road. Mennonites and Church of the Brethren who owned the building conjointly worshipped there and it was used by other groups.) Abraham also became a member of the Brethren church soon after his marriage. The baptismal records were lost, but years later when a survey was made, separating the territory and assigning members on one side of a line to the church at Salisbury and members on the other side to Maple Glen. Abraham and Ann Maria's church letter transferred them to Maple Glen or the Peck Church. Childhood Escapades The family's mode of transportation was horse and buggy, horse-back riding or walking-but mostly walking whether it was to attend church, school or to make a trip to town. John got in a bit of trouble one day soon after they moved to their first mountain home. He was walking alone when he came across a tiny spotted animal, barely able to stand. He had never seen an animal like this before and since it seemed to be lost, the boy decided to make friends. The animal showed no fear. so John cradled his prize in his arms, and gently carried it home, making big plans about how he would love and care for his newfound pet. At home, he received a lecture on the dangers involved in picking up any strange animal and orders to return the fawn to the exact spot where he had found it. Later on when they checked on it, the fawn was gone so evidently the mother deer had taken it to the deep woods. Another time, as John and his sister Mary Ann walked together an on errand to Salisbury, they passed several houses, and at one particular house a pretty little dog came out to bark at them. The bark was friendly, so they were convinced he would be a fine pet. On the return trip, these two talked over the situation and decided if there was no one around when they reached the friendly dog, they would encourage him to follow them home. The dog was friendly enough but didn't seem interested in following, so John picked him up, tucked him inside his coat and headed towards home. After the house was out of sight, the dog tagged merrily along, showing no interest in retracing his steps; each time they heard a horse approaching, the dog was tucked back inside John's coat. The three of them made it home all right, but they never anticipated the reception they received! Both of them got the hardest spanking of their lives from their father, but worst of all was the humiliating experience of being escorted back to the scene of the crime, Fall and Winter 5 where they made their apologies. This story was often told by Mary Ann. When the Whites Creek Lumber Company started to cut timber in the Whites Creek area, the Mort family moved to Addison Township where a village was established. The houses had been built along the road from the Maple Glen Church south, to where it joined old Route 40 west of Grantsville, Md. Theirs was the property nearest the Mason-Dixon line; the neighbors were Folks, Slaubaughs, Dursts and Ringers. By this time, the older children had married and begun families of their own. Sara Ellen married Elisha Ringer and purchased the farm next to her parents. John married Emma Thomas and after her death, Mary McCloskey; they lived on the Casselman River and the McCloskey place. Will married Mintie Grime (or Grimm) and settled near Somerset. Jerry married Lizzie Durst and Mary Ann married Henry Butler; both these families lived on the Maryland side of their home community. Elizabeth and Sam Slaubaugh 'sere married in 1893 and at the same time joined the church at Maple Glen-he by church letter and she by baptism. They too lived near her parents. Nancy and her husband, Will King, settled farther away, at Cleveland City or Casselman. as it is known today. A Tragedy in the Mort Family Young Abe. the baby of the family. worked first on neighborhood farms, then went to live with the Will King familv. He worked during the summer as a water boy for a crew buildmg the Jenninga Railroad: in the winter there were chores to do. So his sister Nancy kepr him busy. Bck of the house there was an open mine where they dug coal for their own use. One day Abe was digging there, and when the mailman came by from Grantsville, he heard calls for help. On investigation he found the young man caught beneath a slide of heavy rock; he ran to the KIng house for help but on their return they found another slide had come down, crushing Abe to death. Two daughters also died young; Susan at seventeen and Martha when she was eleven. Ann Maria was a jolly. heavy-set lady who loved her own children and also those who came later. She made a home for Emma (daughter of John and Emma) after her mother died. Her garden was her pride and joy; surviving grandchildren remember how she named the vegetables--alwavs in German. They don't recall seeing her read--possibly she never learned to read English. She suffered from heart dropsy and died in 1895 at age 56. Abraham, short of stature but wiry and ambitious, passed these same traits on to his descendants. After years of sawmilling, he finally found work that was easier when he carried the mail from Grantsville to Accident, Md. He must have traveled by horseback, because he stayed overnight at Smith's Boardinghouse in Accident and returned to Grantsville the next day. One morning in 1901, he failed to appear for breakfast, and upon investigation, Mr. Smith found him dead in bed Abraham, Ann Maria. their daughter Lizzie. and Verdella Slaubaugh are buried in the Maple Glen Cemetery. The Casselman Chronicle by Helen Eichorn Davis I remember Grandpa as a tall slender man with white hair and beard. He was always busy doing his field and barn work and Grandma was busy in the house with cooking and baking. We frequently visited Grand- ma's house on Sunday and she would have cake for us. She never used a recipe, but just put her ingredients together and it turned out to be a very good cake. My Aunt Olive never married and she helped in the house and garden. I went with her to gather eggs, do the milking and turn the separator, watching how the milk and cream came out into separate buckets. The Ringer name is German and means "One whose business it was to ring a church or town bell at stated times." Grandfather, Elisha J. Ringer, was born December 1, 1856, died Sept.27, 1943. Grandma, Sarah Ellen Mort, was born Aug. 27, 1862, died June 1, 1941. They were married Jan. 1, 1881 and were blessed with eight children:
After Grandma and Grandpa passed away the farm was sold to my parents around 1945 and in 1973 we sold the farm to the Keystone Lime Company of Springs. My aunt Olive made her home with Aunt Bertha in Connellsville. As I think back over the fourteen years that I have memories of them, I am thankful that I was a little girl that went to see Grandpa and Grandma about every Sunday and sit on their laps. In the summer Grandma had the front porch banister filled with blooming flowers - a picture that I will always remember.
